2027 Life Insurance and AD&D

Baldwin County Schools offers voluntary life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance at affordable group insurance rates through Voya Financial.  You may elect life insurance, AD&D insurance, or both.  You must elect the minimum amount of voluntary life insurance (1x salary) in order to elect AD&D.  The AD&D benefit pays in the event of death or loss of limbs, speech, hearing, and more caused by a covered accident.

2027 Open Enrollment Updates

  • Life Insurance: There is a special enrollment opportunity where you may add or increase coverage without health questions, up to the guarantee issue limits: The lesser of 3x earnings or 300,000 for employees and $50,000 for spouses.
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D): Beginning in 2027, life insurance is required in order to elect AD&D coverage. If you currently have AD&D and not life insurance, you will be enrolled in the minimum life insurance amount in order to maintain your AD&D coverage.  You may waive both during enrollment if desired.

About Your Beneficiary

During enrollment, you must review your life insurance beneficiary. The beneficiary is the person you designate to receive your life insurance benefits upon your passing. Your beneficiary can be a person or multiple people, a charitable institution, or your estate. Once named, your beneficiary remains on file until you make a change.

Portability and Conversion

Coverage continuation options are available in the event of employment separation. If you wish to continue your coverage upon separation, you must contact Voya Financial within 30 days of separation. You must elect portability coverage before age 70, and it terminates at age 80. Portability rates differ from active employee rates.
